George Mukai

George Mukai

George Takashi Mukai, 89, of Hilo, died Aug. 13 at Hilo Medical Center. Born June 4, 1923, in Hakalau, he was retired from Hawaii Planing Mill (HPM Building Supply) as the vice-president of credit and member of the Hilo Coast United Church of Christ, Lower Kawailani Kumiai, Military Order of the Purple Heart, 442nd Veterans Club, Disabled American Veterans Chapter 6 (Hilo), Veterans Advisory Committee, Veterans League of Hawaii, Hawaii Island Veterans Memorial Inc. and Swingers and Ohia golf clubs.

Friends may call at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 6 at Dodo Mortuary chapel in Hilo for a 5 p.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Janet Mukai, of Hilo; sons, Derrick (Iris) Mukai and Dwayne (Lisa) Mukai, both of Hilo; daughters, Georgeianne (Dale) Silver, of Dallas, Cathy (Paul) Moon, of Hilo; sister, Millie Perreira, of Wyoming; eight grandchildren; one great-grandchild; numerous nephews, nieces and cousins.

Earl Arakaki

Earl Masa Arakaki, 55, of Hilo, died Aug. 26 at Hilo Medical Center. Born Dec. 4, 1956, in Hilo, he was employed by the University of Hawaii as an agricultural research technician.

Friends may call at 9 a.m. Sept. 7 at Dodo Mortuary Chapel in Hilo for a 10 a.m. service. Family requests casual attire be worn and no flowers.

He is survived by son, Keola (Kylee Dorser) Arakaki, of Hilo; mother, Fumiko Arakaki, of Hilo; brother, Carl (Joyce) Arakaki, of Hilo; sister, Lynette (Newton) Egusa, of Hilo; numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and cousins.

Ronald Paiva

Ronald James “Kela” Paiva, 71, of Hilo, died Aug. 15 at home. He was a retired heavy equipment operator for Hilo Coast Processing Co. and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo.

Friends may call at 5 p.m. Sept. 7 at Dodo Mortuary chapel for a 6 p.m. service. Friends may call again at 8 a.m. Sept. 8 at the chapel for a 10 a.m. service. Burial follows at Alae Cemetery. Family requests casual attire be worn.

He is survived by wife, Gloria Mendoza-Paiva, of Hilo; sons, Russell (Audra) Paiva, of Pepeekeo, Dennis (Lori) Paiva and Anthony Paiva, both of Hilo, Derek (Tammy) Paiva, of Oahu; brothers, Peter (Darlene) Paiva, of Papaikou, Michael (Charlote) Paiva, of Oahu, Patrick Paiva, of Pepeekeo, Gerald (Leann) Paiva, of Hilo; sisters, Alice Nathaniel and Susan Pavao, both of Oahu, Victoria Del Luz, of Pepeekeo, Theresa Matthews, of Papaikou, Roxanne Araki, of Hilo; eight grandchildren; one great-grandson; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

Maude Kamalani

Maude Kaipoleimanu Logan Kamalani, 86, of Waimea, died Aug. 28 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Kahuku, Oahu, she was a retired JCPD clerk with the Honolulu Police Department and member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Services will be held at a future date.

She is survived by husband, David Kamalani of Waimea; son, David (Kiyoko) Kamalani, of Kula, Maui; daughters, Alva Kamalani of Waimea, Danielle (Fred) Kamalani-Patoc, of Honolulu; sister, May Lew, of Hauula, Oahu; brothers, Randolph (Yukie) Loganm, of Chatsworth, Calif., Ahi (Cherlyn) Logan, of Hauula, Oahu; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Stowe Badenoch

Stowe Neal “Tony” Badenoch, 73, of Hilo, died Aug. 14 at his residence in Hilo. Born Nov. 14, in Appleton, Wis., he was a divisional manager in operations and merchandising at Sears, Dayton’s and Eddie Bauer stores; a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout; adjunct professor at Tuskegee University; assistant professor at University of Minnesota; high school teacher at Minneapolis Street Academy; Marine Corps veteran and RSVP volunteer.

Private services were held.

He is survived by wife, Laurayne Badenoch, of Hilo; son, Brett Badenoch, of Indonesia; stepson, Robert (Rose) Samuelson, of Hudson, Wis.; sister, Janet (John) McKelvey, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; brother, Michael (Francie) Badenoch, of Sanibel Island, Fla.; a grandson.

Hiroo Furuya

Hiroo “Porky” Furuya, 94, of Hilo died Aug. 29 at the Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired sales representative for Fred L. Waldron and Company, a U.S. Army World War II veteran and member of the famed 100th Infantry Battalion.

Private services were held. Family requests no monetary gifts or flowers.

He is survived by sons Glenn (Debbie Bacon) Furuya, Nathan (Mayumi) Furuya, Dale (Misun) Furuya; daughter Ann (Randy) Hirokawa; sisters Sonoko Muranaka, Yasuko Taniguchi, Yoshiko (Yuki) Yamasaki; nine grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews.
